Dollar Slips On Trump Comments

Dear Traders,

Despite a relatively quiet start to the new week, buyers in both EUR/USD and GBP/USD were able to book some profit.

During the Asian session we saw the U.S. dollar extending its slide against its major peers after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump who said that he was “not thrilled” with Federal Reserve Chairman Powell’s raising of interest rates. Trump said the Fed should be more accommodating on rates helping him to boost the economy. Consequently, the dollar gave up some of its gains, pushing other counterparts higher in return.

Whether this could be the end of the dollar’s summer rally remains to be seen and hinges on trade talks between China and the U.S. as well as on the Fed’s point of view in terms of tighter monetary policy.

Announcement: MaiMarFX’s Chief Currency Strategist will commence her maternity leave in a few weeks. There will be no signal service while she remains on maternity leave. Daily analysis and signals will be paused until the end of the period of maternity leave.

Summer Trading Break/ Maternity Leave 2018

Dear Traders,

We leave for summer holiday until 20/08/2018.

During the summer break we will not provide our daily signal service nor process any e-mails.

Kind regards,

ECB Meeting Unlikely To Move Euro Exchange Rate

Dear Traders,

It’s decision day at the European Central Bank today but whether this event risk carries much weight will depend on ECB President Mario Draghi’s comments at the ECB press conference. Traders are looking for hints on when interest rates will begin to rise but ECB policy makers suggested earlier that a rate hike won’t come at least until the end of summer 2019. If there is no change in guidance, the euro could give up some of its recent gains.

General speaking, it seems unlikely that Draghi intents to move the single currency at today’s meeting, so watch out for range-bound price action.

As for the dollar, the most interesting piece of data will be released tomorrow with the U.S. 2Q GDP.

EUR/USD: The next hurdle is now seen at 1.1750 before we turn our focus to the crucial resistance area between 1.18-1.1850. Looking however at larger time frames, the currency pair remains trading sideways between 1.1850 and 1.15.

Summer trading break: We are slowly preparing for our summer holiday break which means that we are reducing risk exposure while adopting a cautious approach.

Announcement: Shortly after the summer break our Chief Currency Strategist will commence her maternity leave, which is why daily analysis and signals will be paused until the end of her period of maternity leave.

GBP/USD Holds Above 1.30

Dear Traders,

Sellers in the GBP/USD remained in control after the U.K. CPI fell short of expectations. The soft inflation report is making a BoE rate hike next month less likely than previously expected. The pound tested the 1.3010-mark but was later able to stabilize above 1.3050. Higher resistances could now come in at 1.3150 and 1.3230. As long as the pound remains below 1.3230 we may see a dip towards 1.2950.

Sterling traders may keep an eye on U.K. Retail Sales today at 8:30 UTC.

For day traders of the EUR/USD there was nothing to gain Wednesday. The euro fell victim to a strengthening dollar but losses were limited to the 1.16-handle. As long as 1.16 holds we expect the pair to trade between 1.1720 and 1.1620.

Given the liquidity drain, traders should bear in mind that trading conditions could be challenging during the summer months. A proper risk management is therefore indispensable.

Can U.K. Inflation Numbers Finally Lift The Pound?

Dear Traders,

The biggest story in the market was the sharp drop of the British pound as sellers have shown-up in the GBP/USD following hawkish comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell. With the U.S. economy remaining in good shape despite recent worries about trade tensions, the FOMC believes that “the best way forward is to keep gradually raising the federal funds rate.” The U.S. dollar received a boost from that upbeat outlook with traders bracing for further tightening from the Fed. The market is now pricing in a 90 percent chance of a next rate hike in September and a 64 percent chance of a hike in December.

With the dollar regaining strength both euro and British pound came under increased selling pressure. The GBP/USD dropped more than 140 pips from our short entry level while the EUR/USD slid back towards 1.1650.

Today is day 2 of Powell’s testimony and traders may be looking for further gains in the dollar. We also have the U.K. June inflation numbers scheduled for release at 8:30 UTC. This will be the final piece of CPI data ahead of the BoE August rate decision so watch out for volatile movements in the GBP/USD around that important release.

GBP/USD: Time For Bullish Breakout?

Dear Traders,

The euro proved unable to significantly overcome the 1.1720-hurdle, at least for now. Thus, there was nothing to gain for euro bulls at the beginning of this week. The British pound reversed shy off 1.33 and consolidated between 1.3250 – 1.3215. We may see more volatile movements today with U.K. employment numbers scheduled for release at 8:30 UTC.

GBP/USD: Chances remain in favor of a bullish break above 1.33 since the market is pricing in a 77 percent of a BoE rate hike next month. A higher target could be at 1.3360 followed by 1.3450.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is due to testify before the Senate today at 14:00 UTC. Powell is likely to reiterate that the U.S. economy is in a good shape but he will be grilled on the economic implications of trade wars. Traders should therefore keep an eye on USD crosses around his testimony.

Quiet Trading

Dear Traders,

U.S. inflation data came in line with expectations whereupon the dollar gave up some of its gains. However, the greenback had a rather mixed day while it ended yesterday’s trading day virtually unchanged against the euro and British pound.

Generally speaking, it seems that many market participants refrain from taking any larger positions now amidst the liquidity drain during the summer months. Therefore, we recommend to trade at a low risk or stay at the sidelines as long as risk events are lacking.

The Fed will deliver its monetary policy report to Congress today at 15:00 UTC.

We wish you a wonderful weekend.

Focus On U.S. CPI

Dear Traders,

Technically speaking, we got what we were looking for: A breakout of the cable’s consolidated price range. The GBP/USD broke below 1.3230 after the pair failed to overcome the 1.3285-barrier. The downward movement was mainly due to a strengthening U.S. dollar.

Also, the EUR/USD fell victim to a new round of dollar strength and declined below 1.17. We see a current support at 1.1650 which could stop sellers from entering into new short positions, at least for now. A short-term resistance is, however seen at 1.1740, from where sellers could take the opportunity to sell euros at higher levels.

Today we have the U.S. Consumer Price Index scheduled for release at 12:30 UTC. The headline CPI is due in at 2.9 percent from 2.8 percent which could help boosting the dollar rally. However, a miss could have a bigger impact on the dollar rather than an outcome in line with expectations.

The Rise And Fall Of The Pound Amidst Political Turmoil

Dear Traders,

The biggest story on Monday was the rise and fall of the British pound which were due to political headlines. After Davis’ resignation, Boris Johnson and Steve Baker followed, who did not support Theresa May’s less aggressive so-called ‘soft Brexit’ approach. This throws the stability of the U.K. government into question. Any signs that Brexit negotiations could be delayed due to political uncertainties, could increase the pressure on the pound.

GBP/USD: The pound rose to a high of 1.3363 before the sharp decline happened that sent sterling back towards a test of 1.32. A significant break below 1.32 could spur bearish momentum towards 1.3150 and 1.31. For bullish momentum to resume we would need to see a sustained break above 1.3320.

The euro reversed shy off 1.18 but found some short-term support at 1.1730. ECB President Mario Draghi reiterated his warning that trade wars pose the greatest risk to growth and stability. From a technical perspective, we will keep tabs on a break below 1.17 as long as the euro proves unable to overcome the 1.18-hurdle.

Today, traders will watch first monthly estimate of the U.K. GDP at 8:30 UTC. From the eurozone we have the ZEW Surveys due at 9:00 UTC.
