Daily Forex Signals

A wave of risk aversion sweeps across global financial markets and the anti-risk dollar benefited.

The U.S. dollar rose versus the euro and British pound and the GBP/USD tested, as expected, the support area around 1.3460 before a reversal followed. We anticipate the cable to remain within a trading range between 1.36 and 1.3440 in short-term time frames.

The EUR/USD traded lower and we believe that the pair could test the 1.21-support area before bullish momentum increases. A current resistance is seen at 1.2210.

More USD Gains Ahead?

Welcome everyone to a new trading week!

This week started with some corrective movements in the market as investors evaluate stretched valuations while becoming more cautious on global shares at recent high levels. The U.S. dollar rose against its major peers and higher yields could buoy the demand for the greenback.

Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report disappointed, showing the economy shed 140,000 jobs in December instead of adding 71,000 as expected but it was the unexpectedly spike in wage growth to a seven-month high of 5.1 percent on-year which has helped the dollar gaining some ground in the aftermath of the report.

Traders anticipate that incoming fiscal stimulus will underpin employment, which is why the market could shift away from dovish extremes on Federal Reserve policy expectations.

President-elect Biden pledged to lay out plans for another fiscal stimulus boost on Thursday.

While the longer-term outlook for the dollar remains bearish, we could see more USD gains in the near-term.

EUR/USD

The pair bounced of the 1.2350-barrier and could now be heading towards a designated support zone around 1.2080-60, from where buyers could swoop in. A break below 1.2050, however, would shift the focus toward a crucial support at 1.20. On the upside, we will keep an eye on a break above 1.2275 which could prompt bulls for a test of 1.24.

GBP/USD

The cable formatted a recent downtrend channel with a lower support zone seen between 1.3460 and 1.34. Bulls may attempt to push the pound higher when hitting the 1.3450-mark but if the pair drops below 1.34, we may see further losses towards 1.3330. A current resistance is, however, seen at 1.36.

Investors Look Past Violence in Washington, Focus Turns to NFP Data

Investors have mostly looked past the violence in Washington as they concentrate on the prospect for more economic stimulus and the likelihood that calm will prevail as Joe Biden takes the presidency.

The U.S. dollar steadied after accelerating against its major peers Thursday.

Today, all eyes will turn to the release of the nonfarm payrolls report at 13:30 UTC. The U.S. jobs report is forecast to show a sharp slowdown in hiring. While a softer release is normally dollar-negative, the impact now depends on the overall positive prevailing mood in the market since market participants have looked past weak data throughout last year.

The DAX surpassed the 14000 mark and more gains could be in play. A next target is 14250 but bear in mind that the market is never straight-lined, which is why the index could first test the 14000-level as a new support before we see another leg up.

USD Struggles To Find Clear Direction After U.S. Senate Sweep

Democrats won two key Georgia runoffs and stocks advanced while the U.S. dollar was steady. The U.S. Senate sweep boosted speculation of more fiscal stimulus to revive growth and reigniting the reflation trade.

The dollar, however, struggled to find a clear direction and ended the day largely unchanged versus the euro and pound.

GBP/USD

Are chances in favor of upcoming breakouts? Maybe, since prices narrowed formatting a symmetrical triangle which could predict price breakouts to either side. Watch out for a bearish break below 1.3570 on the downside or a bullish break above 1.3660 on the upside.

The technical picture in the EUR/USD has not substantially changed since our analysis from Monday and a run for 1.24 is still in the cards. For bearish momentum to accelerate we would now need to see a significant break below 1.23.

The DAX rose again towards the 14000-level and we now see a next higher target at 14040 whereas the support remains intact at around 13600.

Georgia Election Runoff to Serve as Main Catalyst

While there were no big market movements Tuesday, both EUR/USD and GBP/USD ended the trading day in higher territory. Reason for the upward tendency was a weakening U.S dollar which traded at its lowest since February 2018 against its major peers. Georgia senate runoff election results contributed to the dollar’s weakness and selling pressure could accelerate if democrats take control of the senate by winning two seats in the Georgia election runoff. If, however, senate republicans maintain their majority, the dollar could strengthen. Key elections in Georgia serve as an important catalyst in the market as they will decide which party controls the U.S. Senate for the next two years, setting the scope of President-elect Joe Biden’s agenda.

The results are expected today, so we might see some volatile movements in USD crosses.

Technically, we saw the euro surging to a high of 1.2326 amid broad-based dollar weakness but with the election results still to be announced, the pair rebounded from its highs. Traders now might pay attention to a price breaks either above 1.2350 or below 1.2250 but higher volatility should nevertheless be taken into account.

The cable bounced off the 1.3650-hurdle but a renewed rise above 1.3630 could prompt the pair for a break above 1.3650 and lead to another test of 1.37 or even 1.3740. On the downside we see an important support around 1.3450.

Daily Forex Signals

The British pound dropped below 1.36 and slid to an intraday low of 1.3541 after England entered its third lockdown. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a national lockdown starting from Monday night until mid-February.

Elsewhere, Germany is set to extend its lockdown.

GBP/USD gave up some of its recent gains after bulls failed to push the pair above 1.3705. A next important support area will be around the 1.35-level and if that area proves to hold, chances are in favor of another leg up with a next target at 1.3740. However, bulls will first need to overcome the 1.3650-level in short-term time frames.

EUR/USD reversed shy of 1.2310 and finally ended the trading day virtually unchanged. Bulls in this pair will continue to focus on a break above 1.2310 while bears may wait for a break below 1.22.

The DAX experienced a roller-coaster ride Monday and finally gave up on 13900 and dipped slightly below 13600. We continue to focus on a trading range between 14000 and 13400.

U.S. Arbeitslosenbericht für Dezember am Freitag

Will The Rally Continue in 2021?

Dear traders,

We hope that you are all doing well and wish you a safe, healthy and prosperous new year!

The market begins the new year at rich valuations with stocks fluctuating near a record amid renewed concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. While market analysts expect that the economic path will be bumpy over the first quarter in 2021, positive expectations are that widespread vaccine distribution, government stimulus and central bank support will reignite economic growth after the middle of the year.

Green light to a continuation of the market’s rally?

Before bubble warnings are probably getting louder in 2021, we, as day traders will follow the trend, which is our friend – as long as it remains intact. However, market participants should try to avoid greed and given the fact that price trends have raised eyebrows with Bitcoin’s record-breaking advance as well as indices that ended the year at 30- or 40-times profits, buying could become increasingly dangerous.

GBP/USD

Britain exited its decades-long membership of the European Union trading bloc and a last-minute Brexit agreement has helped the currency pair reaching for fresh highs. Traders now wonder whether further gains beyond 1.3700 could be in play.

Analysts expect the currency to hold its ground around current levels through 2021. Looking at the technical picture, we focus on higher targets around 1.3720-50 but we expect some corrective moves in the near-term since the pair trades in overbought territory. A current support is seen t 1.36.

EUR/USD

The euro’s trend is clear and a clear target for bulls is the 1.25 level last reached in February 2018. There might be no fundamental reason why that target should not be challenged even if the European central bank tries hard to subdue the currency to lift the Eurozone’s inflation rate.

With the uptrend continuing, a direct intervention in the foreign exchange rate from the ECB is unlikely since the correlation between monetary policy and the level of the currency seems to have broken down recently. Even if the ECB eases its monetary policy further in the first few months of 2021 to counter the impact on the economy of the coronavirus pandemic, the euro might not weaken as much as it would have done in the past.

In short-term time frames we anticipate corrective movements towards 1.2150 and 1.2050 but if the euro is able to climb above 1.2310, we will shift our focus to 1.24.

DAX

The index reached a high of 13912 amid the global equity rally. A next bullish target is now seen at 14000 followed by 14300 while support zones are seen at 13400, 13200 and 13000.

Upcoming events this week:

FOMC minutes on Wednesday

U.S. unemployment report for December on Friday
