Short Traders Profit Amid Tuesday’s Selloff

Tuesday saw a selloff across the markets while the U.S. dollar rallied. Short traders were able to profit, particularly in the GBP/USD where our short position (SELL at 1.3815) has reached its profit target.

Elsewhere, cryptocurrencies saw a flash crash with Ethereum and Bitcoin correcting recent gains and testing crucial support levels.

The EUR/USD remained confined to a small trading range ahead of the ECB decision tomorrow. We expect that the euro’s lethargic state will continue, at least until the ECB press conference tomorrow.  We look at a price range between 1.19 and 1.1750 for now.

GBP/USD: A lower support is seen at 1.3730 and once that lower barrier is significantly breached, our focus shifts to 1.3650. Resistances are seen at 1.3880 and 1.3980.

DAX: We keep tabs on price breakouts either above 16000 or below 15700.

DAX: Next Target 16100?

Both EUR/USD and GBP/USD ended yesterday’s trading day virtually unchanged. The euro remained in a very narrow trading range between 1.19 and 1.1850 while the cable dipped slightly lower towards 1.3815 but was able to stabilize above 1.3830 towards the end of the day.

The best performer was the DAX that surged to a high of 15960, providing us with a good gain from our long entry at 15860. As long as 15700 holds, we keep tabs on a higher target at 16100.

From Fed Taper To ECB Taper

U.S. Nonfarm payrolls disappointed last Friday with only 235,000 jobs created in August.

The U.S. dollar sold off in an imminent response to the report but the greenback’s decline was limited after several days of weakness while bigger currency movements remained absent.

Despite the weaker than forecast job growth, average hourly earnings rose 0.6 percent last month, bolstering the dollar as hawkish Federal Reserve officials might sound the alarm. Speaking of a taper, traders now shift their focus to the November 2-3 FOMC meeting after policy makers have one more report from September in hand.

EUR/USD

The euro’s recent climb cannot be solely attributed to the dollar’s weakness, but also to speculation that the European Central bank is considering its own taper timeline.

According to economists surveyed by Bloomberg, the European Central Bank will start slowing down its pandemic bond purchases in the fourth quarter and may not exhaust the whole 1.85 trillion-euro program before it ends next year.

On Thursday, ECB policy makers will have to decide when to shift the institution away from its crisis mode. The inflation outlook now warrants stepping back stimulus, with inflation jumping to 3 percent, well above the ECB’s goal. The hawks have been very silent during the crisis phase but now as ‘normality’ is coming back, they could try to convince the doves to slow down the pace of asset purchases. More cautious policy makers will try to keep the focus on the uneven nature of the economic recovery and the risks from the delta strain.

The greatest danger comes however from a missing agreement between ECB policy makers and the risk that by December or January they still haven’t come to an agreement.

Technically, the euro touched its range resistance around 1.19 and traders wonder whether this could be the limit. Ahead of Thursday’s ECB decision we expect some corrective movements towards at least 1.1830 and eventually 1.1750. A break above 1.1910 however, could spur bullish action towards 1.1950 and 1.1980.

GBP/USD

The cable reversed shy of 1.39 whilst entering overbought territory. As long as the pair remains below 1.3930, we favor consolidative movements between 1.39 and 1.37.

U.S. markets are closed for the Labor Day holiday today but volatility is expected to pick up materially after the holiday.

Will Payrolls Reignite The Dollar’s Strength?

Good morning traders, it’s payrolls day again.

The U.S. jobs report will shape expectations about when the Federal Reserve might start tapering its stimulus and when to expect a rate hike. Since this is a highly awaited event risk, we will prepare for bigger moves amid possibly extreme volatility.

We saw the U.S. dollar holding a drop ahead of today’s report and going into the release, the greater impact seems to come from a stronger reading that spurs bullish momentum in the dollar. Should the reading disappoint the forecast for a 750,000 jobs increase, the greenback will further depreciate.

Looking at the EUR/USD, however, even in case of a weaker payrolls number, the rise of the euro might be limited as the pair remains overbought with a correction overdue.

The GBP/USD broke above 1.3830 and next targets could be at 1.3860 and 1.3880 but it’s the same situation as the EUR/USD: Both pairs look overbought and thus, chances are in favor of a greater impact for USD strength in case of an upbeat NFP report.

We wish everyone good trades and a beautiful weekend.

EUR/USD And GBP/USD Continue Upward Trend

Buyers in both EUR/USD and GBP/USD were able to profit Wednesday with the euro and cable continuing their recent upward movements on weaker than expected ADP data, which is as a foretaste of NFP job numbers tomorrow. Both of our long entries have thus proved profitable.

EUR/USD

The pair formatted a short-term upward channel that now ranges from 1.1790 to 1.1875. We continue to see an important resistance area between 1.1880-1.1920. On the bottom side, we will keep an eye on a break below 1.1790 which could lead to a fall towards 1.1735 and 1.17.

GBP/USD

We expect the pair to trade between 1.3820 and 1.3730. A break below 1.3725 could spur bearish momentum towards 1.3650. Sterling bulls on the topside could wait for a break above 1.3830 in order to anticipate higher targets at around 1.3880.

Euro And Cable Correct Gains

The EUR/USD extended its gains to a high of 1.1845 before we finally saw a correction. The pullback was anticipated and could continue until 1.1750. If the euro is, however, able to hold above 1.18 traders will shift their focus to the crucial 1.1880-1.19 resistance.

The GBP/USD remained consolidated between 1.3810 and 1.3740. A break below 1.3710 could spur bearish momentum towards 1.3650, whereas on the upside, the 1.3820-hurdle remains an important resistance in the short-term.

The DAX touched 16000 but refrained from an excursion beyond that level – at least until now. As long as the current support at 15700 holds, we still favor further upward moves towards 16100.
