Eventful Week Gives Hope For New Momentum

After several weeks of lackluster momentum, market participants are now bracing for a heavy loaded week of event risk with not only three crucial Central Bank meetings on tap but also the U.S. nonfarm payrolls at the end of this week.

The first risk event will be Wednesday’s FOMC rate decision. The Federal Reserve is expected to slow the pace of tightening to 25 basis points. The problem is that the markets are ahead of themselves, appearing more dovish than the Fed. Rate cuts are already priced in looking two years out while inflation is still far above target. In other words, while the Fed may keep the focus on near-term tightening, the market is already speculating on an end of the tightening cycle instead of the possibility of keeping rates restrictive for some time. This sets the stage for disappointment rather than for confirmation of the speculation.

On Thursday, the Bank of England and European Central Bank rate decisions are due.

The BoE has hinted at yet another 50bp rate hike which is largely priced into GBP crosses. What could be bearish for the pound would be an additional vote split between 50bp and 25bp among BoE policy makers.

GBP/USD: The current bias is still bullish, provided the pair remains above 1.2250. A break below 1.2240 would possibly result in a quick sell-off towards 1.2170/1.21 and possibly even 1.20. On the top side, sterling bulls were still unable to push through the resistance zone at 1.2450 but this week’s fundamental drivers could provide a catalyst for a leg higher – or lower.

EUR/USD: The euro’s uptrend is still intact even though overbought conditions and the solid resistance around 1.09 raise the odds for a correction. If the ECB hints at a more aggressive approach in hiking rates to fight inflation while the Fed remains comfortable with slowing the pace of hikes, we could see a test of 1.10 and possibly even 1.11. On the downside, we keep tabs on the 1.0650-area as a potential support zone.

Tight Ranges To Continue – Most Probably

Today we have the U.S. GDP reading on tap (due at 13:30 UTC). However, traders doubt that this reading will generate large market movements since market participants await next week’s exceptional event risk. Investors may not want to risk premature exposure ahead of the FOMC rate decision and U.S. nonfarm payrolls next week.

GBP/USD: Correction Ended?

As anticipated the GBP/USD corrected recent gains and tested the support area between 1.23 – 1.2250. If 1.23 holds, a next leg up is possible with a potential upside breakout above 1.2450. However, another fall below 1.2280 could see a bearish move towards 1.22.

Profitable Trades

As for our two major currency pairs, it has been a profitable start to the new week. In terms of profits, however, the DAX is lagging behind but we await a price breakout very soon. We will keep tabs on prices either above 15200 or below 15000.

EUR/USD And GBP/USD: Uptrend Could Be Losing Steam

Prices of the U.S. dollar’s counterparts continue trading upward, and when we look particularly at the EUR/USD we see that the pair broke in the direction anticipated by an inverted Head and Shoulders chart formation. Thus, the euro was pushed to the 1.09 resistance handle. The euro’s recent uptrend has largely been driven by the dollar sell-off and the European Central Bank’s hawkish stance to fight inflation by further interest rate hikes. The ECB is expected to raise rates by 50bps at its next rate decision in February. The Federal Reserve on the other hand is widely expected to slow its rate hike path, pointing toward a less hawkish approach. Markets await a 25bps rate hike at the Fed’s meeting next Wednesday.

EUR/USD: Bulls may try to push the pair up to 1.10 but considering the fact that the euro is close to overbought levels, the next leg up might be limited to 1.0970, for now. Bears will watch out for price breaks below 1.0830 and 1.0730 in order to sell the euro.

GBP/USD: The pound tested the 1.2450-area but since economic prospects in the U.K. are not looking too good, we doubt that there is far more upside potential. We expect the pair to fall back towards 1.23 – 1.2250.

From a fundamental backdrop, traders will watch Friday’s U.S. PCE deflator that could generate some volatility.
