The Rise And Fall Of The Pound Amidst Political Turmoil

Dear Traders,

The biggest story on Monday was the rise and fall of the British pound which were due to political headlines. After Davis’ resignation, Boris Johnson and Steve Baker followed, who did not support Theresa May’s less aggressive so-called ‘soft Brexit’ approach. This throws the stability of the U.K. government into question. Any signs that Brexit negotiations could be delayed due to political uncertainties, could increase the pressure on the pound.

GBP/USD: The pound rose to a high of 1.3363 before the sharp decline happened that sent sterling back towards a test of 1.32. A significant break below 1.32 could spur bearish momentum towards 1.3150 and 1.31. For bullish momentum to resume we would need to see a sustained break above 1.3320.

The euro reversed shy off 1.18 but found some short-term support at 1.1730. ECB President Mario Draghi reiterated his warning that trade wars pose the greatest risk to growth and stability. From a technical perspective, we will keep tabs on a break below 1.17 as long as the euro proves unable to overcome the 1.18-hurdle.

Today, traders will watch first monthly estimate of the U.K. GDP at 8:30 UTC. From the eurozone we have the ZEW Surveys due at 9:00 UTC.

Subdued Price Action

Dear Traders,

Trading was subdued on Monday with both major currency pairs fluctuating in tight ranges.

As expected, the euro recovered some of its losses towards 1.1650 after it failed to break below 1.1550. As mentioned in yesterday’s analysis, a near-term resistance is in the 1.1650-1.1720 region from where sellers in the EUR/USD may take the opportunity to sell euros at higher levels.

ECB President Draghi will deliver another speech today (8:00 UTC) at the ECB Forum in Sintra, Portugal.

The GBP/USD has shown little willingness to test the 1.32-level and finally headed towards 1.3280 this morning. A next hurdle could come in at 1.33 now, followed by 1.3420.

Prepare For Corrections Around U.S. CPI And FOMC Minutes

Dear Traders,

The U.S. dollar continued its recent weakness ahead of today’s U.S. CPI numbers. Subsequently, the EUR/USD was accompanied by a bullish tilt and rose towards 1.2380. Long traders in the euro were thus able to book a good profit by trading our long entry.

It will now be interesting for traders of the EUR/USD as the currency pair could be primed for a technical breakout. If the euro rises above 1.2370/80 we see chances of an extended upward move towards 1.2430. A significant break below 1.2350, however, could shift the short-term bias in favor of the bears with lower targets at 1.2330 and 1.2310. A break below 1.23/1.2290 could even alter the current sentiment from bullish to bearish.

The British pound stabilized above 1.4150 against the dollar and now faces the 1.42-barrier. A break above 1.4225 could lead to further strength towards 1.4270. Bears in the GBP/USD should, however, pay attention to a significant break below 1.4080, which could drive the pair towards 1.4025.

Today, the focus will return to economic data and the outlook for U.S. consumer prices (due for release at 12:30 UTC). Later in the day we have the FOMC minutes scheduled for release, so there could be some volatile movements around these releases. Bear in mind that the Federal Reserve is optimistic concerning further rate hikes this year, so the minutes could underline that positive outlook which would be dollar-positive. In other words, prepare for corrective movements around the CPI and FOMC release.

Apart from U.S. data, sterling traders will watch the U.K.’s Industrial Production numbers due for release at 8:30 UTC, while euro traders will listen to a speech of ECB President Mario Draghi at 11:00 UTC.

U.S. Dollar Weaker Ahead Of NFPs

Dear Traders,

The best performing currency pair on Thursday was the EUR/USD, which took another glimpse above 1.25 but was yet unable to hold that level. Our yesterday’s long signal has proved profitable while euro bulls lie in wait for a next leg up, targeting at 1.27. The question whether the single currency could be vulnerable to further gains will mainly depend on the demand for dollars following today’s U.S. labor market data.

One reason for the euro’s surge were reports that some ECB policymakers are pushing President Mario Draghi to give investors clearer guidance on when rates might rise. In a nutshell, these rumors confirm that the ECB is comfortable with the euro’s appreciation.

The most prominent event risk on the last trading day of this week will be the January Non-Farm Payrolls at 13:30 UTC and if payrolls exceed expectations combined with an uptick in wage growth we could see the dollar recovering some of its recent losses. However, traders should bear in mind that given the dollar’s strong downtrend, market participants might be inclined to sell USD at higher levels.

Recently, the release of the monthly NFP report failed to generate extreme volatility in the market, which is why traders now brace for a more muted market reaction. Whatever the case, we will prepare for both bullish and bearish scenarios.

EUR/USD

The current uptrend channel is still intact and after the euro refrained from falling below 1.2385 the chances are in favor of further bullish momentum, driving the pair towards 1.2650 and possibly 1.27.

GBP/USD: There has been no significant correction in the recent performance of the cable with the pair following a clear uptrend. How the cable will trade within the next hours will however depend on the outcome of the payrolls. If the pound finds its way above 1.43 we focus on higher targets at 1.4380 and 1.4450. For bearish momentum to accelerate, the pound would first need to fall below 1.4220 and further 1.4185.

Have a beautiful weekend!

USD Receives Boost But Uptrend In EUR And GBP Remains Intact

Dear Traders,

We finally saw some reversal in the FX market after consecutive days of strength in both euro and pound. The U.S. dollar received a boost from encouraging comments from U.S. President Trump, who used the ‘strong dollar’ language in order to soften previous comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin who seemed to avoid the strong dollar policy. The sharp reversal happened after euro and pound have surged to new highs.

The euro took out the 1.25-barrier and rose to a high of 1.2537 on the back of the Eurozone’s improving outlook. ECB President Draghi declined to say that the euro was too strong while his comments on growth were relatively bullish. He said that the euro’s strength was in part down to the regions improving outlook. In short, Draghi’s commentary was not enough to trigger a reversal in the euro’s uptrend. Thus, euro traders should generally expect further euro strength, anticipating higher targets in the EUR/USD at 1.2560 and 1.27.

The British pound was able to extend its gains towards 1.4350 before a sharp reversal occurred, sending the cable back below 1.42.

Today, traders will pay attention to the U.S. and U.K. 4Q GDP figures, which could affect the price action in both EUR/USD and GBP/USD. We will watch the release of the U.K. GDP at 9:30 UTC. The U.S. GDP is scheduled for release at 13:30 UTC.

We wish you good trades and a nice weekend.

Euro And Cable Trend Higher And Higher And Now…Maybe Lower?

Dear Traders,

There was nothing stopping the British pound from further rising against the U.S. dollar. While we still anticipate near-term corrections in the strong performance of the GBP/USD, we need to pay attention to the solid uptrend. The pound was able to stabilize above 1.40 and if it extends its gains above 1.4060 we could possibly see a run for 1.4170. On the bottom side, we expect some fresh support coming in at 1.3950. However, traders should bear in mind that corrections are inevitable following the strong performance of the recent days and weeks. One look at the weekly chart below is enough to realize that the cable approaches overbought territory and thus faces the risk of pullbacks.

Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar suffered another setback against its major counterparts. U.S. President Trump’s decision to put tariffs on imported solar panels and washing machines may stoke protectionism and fears of trade wars.

The euro trended upwards, contrary to expectations, ahead of tomorrow’s ECB meeting. We still see the risk of profit-taking in the EUR/USD given the possibility of dovish comments from ECB President Draghi at tomorrow’s ECB’s press conference. For now, we expect the EUR/USD to trade between 1.2380 and 1.2250.

Important economic data that could have an impact on today’s price action:

9:30 UK Labor Market Report

15:00 USA Existing Home Sales

USD Steady Ahead Of NFP Report

Dear Traders,

The British pound further weakened and we got what we were looking for in yesterday’s analysis: a breakout of a symmetrical triangle even if it was a relatively small bearish breakout with losses being limited to a low of 1.3357. If the pound remains below 1.34 we expect further bearish momentum driving GBP/USD towards 1.33. For the short-term bias to shift from bearish to slightly bullish it would need a sustained break above 1.35. A higher target would then be at 1.3650.

There was little movement in the EUR/USD Wednesday while none of our entries was triggered. The euro dropped below 1.18 but found some halt at 1.1780. Whether we will see further losses towards 1.17 remains to be seen and hinges on the risk appetite for dollars ahead of tomorrow’s NFP report. For bullish momentum to accelerate it would require a break above 1.1920.

ECB President Mario Draghi will hold a press conference as Chair of the Group of Governors and Head of Supervision (GHOS) today at 16:00 UTC. If he touches on monetary policy the euro could respond with some volatile swings.

Monetary Policy Speak And U.K. CPI Data Could Boost Risk Appetite

Dear Traders,

The price trend in both GBP/USD and EUR/USD remains disappointing overall. The price of the euro has barely changed with the currency pair still oscillating around 1.1670. The British pound found some halt near 1.3060 and ended the trading day above 1.31.

The lethargic market situation might soon come to an end as market participants brace for higher volatility ahead of today’s upcoming high-profile event. The Heads of the European Central Bank, Federal Reserve and Bank of England are scheduled to speak on a panel in Frankfurt at 10:00 UTC. Chances are slim that policymakers will reveal anything new that the market does not already know but traders should prepare for heightened volatility around this event. If none of today’s speakers touches on monetary policy, the round table discussion will be a non-event for traders.

Shortly before that, sterling traders will pay close attention to the U.K. Consumer Price Report at 9:30 UTC. If inflation data beats expectations the pound could soar towards 1.32 and 1.3250. On the bottom side we will wait for a break below 1.3020 and more importantly 1.30.

EUR/USD

In short-term time frames the euro seems to be primed for an upside breakout. If the price climbs above 1.1680 we may see some bullish continuation towards 1.1715/25. For bearish momentum to accelerate the single currency must significantly drop below 1.1640.

GBP/USD Trends Upwards While EUR/USD Remains Stuck In Consolidation Phase

Dear Traders,

Monday was characterized by a weakening U.S. dollar which suffered a slight setback against its counterparts. The recent weakness can be attributed to uncertainty over the future monetary policy stance of the Federal Reserve. New York Fed President William Dudley plans to retire next year and with Dudley’s planned exit, the unfilled board seats create uncertainty over the Fed’s approach to policy in the coming year.

The EUR/USD extended its consolidative mode into the new week and traders are still struggling with false breakouts and limited price swings. ECB President Mario Draghi is scheduled to speak at the ECB Forum on Banking Supervision today at 9:00 UTC but these opening remarks might be not enough to free the euro from its lethargy. Technically speaking, we now wait for a break below 1.1570 to sell euros whereas on the topside, we expect potential gains to be limited until 1.1660 and 1.17 amidst subdued price action.

The best performer was the GBP/USD which rose towards 1.3180, providing buyers a good profit yesterday. The latest upward move is not surprising given the fact that the pound continues to oscillate within its range between 1.3340 and 1.30.

Euro And Pound Sell-Off, Focus Now On U.S. GDP Data

Dear Traders,

The EUR/USD sold off on the back of a dovish ECB announcement on the one side and a strengthening U.S. dollar on the other side. European Central Bank policy makers agreed to cut monthly bond purchases in half to EUR30 billion in January but extend the bond buys at this pace until September 2018. While this outcome was exactly what the market has anticipated, Draghi said there won’t be a “sudden end to the buying” and the shift shouldn’t even be called tapering. What weakens the euro was the fact that a “large majority” of ECB policy makers favored keeping the bond buying program open-ended so they can adjust it at any time in case inflation stays sluggish. With regard to future interest rate hikes, Draghi said that rates will remain “at the present levels for an extended period of time, and well past the horizon of our net asset purchases”.

In short, the ECB’s decision can be described as slightly more dovish than euro bulls may have hoped for.

As regards the U.S. dollar, prospects for the U.S. tax reform spurred the dollar rally. The U.S. House passed a budget resolution unlocking a process to cut taxes by the end of the year. The greenback experienced broad-based gains versus other major currencies but the focus now shifts to the third-quarter GDP reading, scheduled for release today at 12:30 UTC. Even though economists are looking for slower growth of 2.6 percent, dollar bulls may take this opportunity to jump back in on pullbacks. Traders should prepare for heightened volatility around the GDP release.

EUR/USD: The euro cleared its crucial support at 1.17 and even 1.1650. After breaking below theses support levels, the case has built up for the bears and we now expect the euro to tumble towards 1.1550 but maybe not straight-lined. Former support levels could now turn into resistances with pullbacks may be limited until 1.17/1.1730.

GBP/USD

Only yesterday we have talked about the pound’s bullish break above 1.3230 which seemed to indicate further gains towards 1.33 but the opposite happened: The pound fell in tandem with the euro and headed for another test of 1.3110. If the 1.31-support breaks the previous bull breakout above 1.3230 turns out be a fake-out. In case the cable falls below 1.3085 we anticipate further losses towards 1.3030 and 1.2950.

We wish you good trades and a relaxing weekend.
