DAX Tests 15200, Pound Sterling Above 1.23

After several lossmaking fakeouts this week the DAX finally broke above 15200 and is currently testing that level on its hold as a higher support. If the price area between 15150 and 15200 holds, we may see a further leg up towards 15500. On the other side, a significant breakout below 15000 would change the sentiment in favor of the bears.

The best performer yesterday was the British pound which erased previous losses and climbed up to 1.23. Above 1.22, a next higher target is seen at 1.2450.

Loss-Making DAX

The British pound dropped towards 1.2170 against the greenback and we were able to pocket some profits with two sell orders yesterday. Our short entry in the DAX, however, proved unprofitable which is why we had to record two losing trades. We will now keep an eye on breakouts below 15080 or above 15160.

Let’s see what today has in store in terms of profitable trades.

Our trading ideas for today 17/1/23:

EUR/USD

Long @ 1.0840

Short @ 1.0785

GBP/USD

Long @ 1.2215

Short @ 1.2165

DAX® (GER40)

Long @ 15160

Short @ 15080

Look For Small Profits

Welcome to a new trading week.

EUR/USD: As indicated last week, there was a bullish breakout pattern and bulls took advantage of this opportunity against the backdrop of a weakening U.S. dollar, driving the euro above the 1.08 threshold. We were able to pocket some good gains in the euro last week. Where could the euro be headed now? The euro has rallied strongly since September with little correction. However, since the markets never tend straight-lined in a particular direction, we expect a (necessary) correction soon. A current support could come in at around 1.06. However, if 1.08 holds, bulls would have to focus on a short-term target area at around 1.1180.

GBP/USD: Last week’s oscillations left much to be desired and unfortunately, there were more loss-making false breakouts than profitable price breakouts. But these phases are also part of day trading. Let’s see how it continues this week. Meanwhile, the upward trend is intact. Above 1.2350, we could see a retest of the 1.24 area which could result in an upward movement to 1.26. An important support is currently seen at 1.20.

DAX: The index showed its strength and took off the 15000-hurdle. A few good weekly gains were achieved last week. If the DAX remains above 14500, we are looking towards the 16000 threshold.

We do not expect high volatility at the beginning of the week. It is the Martin Luther King Day in the U.S. and the markets remain closed for the holiday. Traders should therefore focus on smaller profits.

U.S. Dollar Lower Post CPI

The U.S. inflation report for December came in as expected at 6.5 percent, down from November’s 7.1 percent result. Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar turned lower.

The euro broke above 1.08 against the dollar while the DAX held above the crucial 15000-mark.

We had some good results in the EUR/USD and DAX this trading week. We remind you to save some weekly profits today. The only problem child was the cable which remains in the red for now.

We wish you a beautiful weekend.

All Eyes On U.S. CPI

Traders await the U.S. inflation data today at 13:30 UTC.

If CPI data shows a softening in inflation, it would be a stronger case for a smaller 25bp rate hike at the Fed’s next meeting in February. Nonetheless, Fed officials expect rates to remain above 5 percent for a long time- something the markets refuse to believe.

EUR/USD: Inverted Head-shoulder Pattern To Predict Further Gains?

EUR/USD: Inverted head-shoulder pattern to predict further gains?

The euro held firmly above 1.05, exiting its primary downtrend channel, and is now flirting with the upper 1.07-area. Will we see a next leg up towards 1.12 or possibly 1.14? Chances for a bullish breakout increase as long as the common currency remains above 1.0450 and climbs above 1.08.

For the sentiment to shift from bullish to bearish, however, we must see a fall below 1.03.

Next interesting data release will be tomorrow’s U.S. CPI which could set the tone for the coming days.
