After Fed Focus Shifts To Friday’s NFP Data

Large swings were absent yesterday when the Federal Reserve failed to send a dovish signal, signaling only that it is not yet ready to ease its policy stance imminently. Thus, a rate cut in March is still possible but the likelihood of this early cut appears to be slim at the moment.

Expectations in terms of rate cuts could however change as soon as tomorrow, when the U.S. Nonfarm payrolls report is scheduled to be released. If job growth surprises to the downside, a March rate cut could be back on the table, which would weaken the U.S. dollar. Conversely, if NFP numbers are stronger-than-forecast, the greenback will rise on an unwinding of dovish bets.

Let’s wait and see.

FOMC Decision: Will The Fed Send A Dovish Signal?

Traders should be prepared for increased volatility with the Federal Reserve’s first policy decision of 2024 coming up. While no change in interest rates is expected, the Fed could adjust its monetary policy guidance which could trigger large swings. If the central bank embraces a more dovish posture, the U.S. dollar will fall. In the event of a hawkish signal and pushing back against expectations of deep and early rate cuts, the dollar should rise sharply.

The Fed’s interest rate decision will be announced at 19:00 GMT today, followed by the press conference 30 minutes later.

EUR/USD: Watch out for breaks either below 1.0790 (short) or above 1.0910 (long).

GBP/USD: Today, we will pay attention to a rise above 1.2760 which could attract buyers or a fall below 1.2640 that could increase bearish momentum towards 1.26 and further 1.2550.

Ereignisreiche Woche voraus

Busy Week Ahead

We entered the last week of January which is traditionally very busy and this year is no different with a packed economic calendar of key central bank decisions and big data releases.

The Federal Reserve policy meeting on Wednesday will be the highlight in the days ahead and while market participants remain convinced that a dovish pivot is drawing closer, prominent Fed managers warned that expectations around future rate cuts were too optimistic and that the Fed does not intend to cut rates as quickly as the markets expect. With no change in monetary policy and no dot plot release this week, traders will be looking for fresh hints on the timing of the first rate cut by Fed Chair Jerome Powell in his press conference. If Powell leaves the door open to a possible rate cut in the first half of the year, the U.S. dollar could weaken.

Furthermore, the greenback’s direction will also hinge on the latest U.S. jobs numbers which will be release on Friday. The jobs market is forecast to have cooled in January. An upside surprise in the payrolls report would diminish hopes for an early rate cut and the dollar could thus experience a short squeeze.

On Thursday, the Bank of England meets to set its monetary policy. Like the ECB and Fed, the BoE is expected to keep rates unchanged. There are no expectations for any rate cuts soon, but the BoE may make its first dovish tilt in its February meeting, a move that would be negative for the pound.

The overall price development remained very sluggish for traders and even a better-than-expected U.S. Core PCE report from last Friday could not really boost the U.S. dollar. However, the tight ranges are likely to be tested due to an anticipated lift in volatility in the days ahead.

ECB Decision Takes Center Stage

All eyes will turn to the European Central Bank decision today at 13:15 GMT where the central bank is expected to stand pat on rates with inflation still above target. While inflation in the euro area has maintained a downward trajectory during the last year, ECB policymakers are wary of upside risks to inflation. The biggest threat might be the latest crisis in the Middle East with a temporary supply shock posing a risk to European businesses.

Traders will focus on ECB President Christine Lagarde’s press briefing at 13:45 GMT for an updated view on the economy and inflation outlook.

The risk for the euro is to the downside. For the common currency to recover, Lagarde would need to sound surprisingly hawkish, dashing hopes for an ECB rate cut anywhere near as much as what markets have priced in. Markets expect the ECB to cut rates in June. If the communication among policymakers is, however, not clear, the euro could end up drifting sideways.

We will focus on a break below 1.0820 and further 1.08 in order to sell the euro towards 1.0750 and 1.07. Above 1.0935, the focus shifts back towards the 1.10-threshold.

Daily Signals: Waiting For Breakouts

As for our daily trading signals, the EUR/USD performed quiet well during the last days despite its tight trading range. Currently our monthly performance stands at 111 pips profit only for the pair EUR/USD. Trading the GBP/USD has however proved to be more difficult with more false breakouts due to a very narrow trading range. We will wait for sustained breakouts of the cable’s sideways range between 1.28 and 1.25.

The DAX recovered some of its recent losses and is currently trading above 16700. We will focus on a significant break above 16820 in order to buy the index towards a test of 17000.

ECB Meeting And U.S. PCE Data Will Take Center Stage

Welcome to a new trading week.

From a fundamental perspective, trading might be in quiet waters at the beginning of this week but towards the end of the week we have two high-importance data releases and events.

The European Central Bank decision will take center stage on Thursday. Most action will come from the commentary by President Christine Lagarde. Markets currently expect the ECB to cut interest rates in April, but Lagarde warned that’s too early, pointing to a summer rate cut instead. While traders hope for a timetable of when to expect the first cut, this ECB meeting will likely be too soon to hope for a strong guidance. If Lagarde is however successful in dampening rate cut expectations, the euro could briefly spark higher.

On Friday, the core U.S. PCE index will be important in shaping expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts.

Looking at the technical picture, both EUR/USD and GBP/USD remain stuck in broad ranges. As long as currencies are struggling for momentum, traders are advised to focus on range trading and breakout levels.

EUR/USD – Watch out for breakouts above 1.10 or below 1.08.

GBP/USD – Sideways range is intact. Sustained breakouts above 1.28 or below 1.25 will be of interest.

DAX – We will focus on a bullish break above 16820 in order to try another push for 17000. Remaining above 16300 will favor bullish action.
