U.S. Dollar Weaker Ahead Of NFPs

Dear Traders,

The best performing currency pair on Thursday was the EUR/USD, which took another glimpse above 1.25 but was yet unable to hold that level. Our yesterday’s long signal has proved profitable while euro bulls lie in wait for a next leg up, targeting at 1.27. The question whether the single currency could be vulnerable to further gains will mainly depend on the demand for dollars following today’s U.S. labor market data.

One reason for the euro’s surge were reports that some ECB policymakers are pushing President Mario Draghi to give investors clearer guidance on when rates might rise. In a nutshell, these rumors confirm that the ECB is comfortable with the euro’s appreciation.

The most prominent event risk on the last trading day of this week will be the January Non-Farm Payrolls at 13:30 UTC and if payrolls exceed expectations combined with an uptick in wage growth we could see the dollar recovering some of its recent losses. However, traders should bear in mind that given the dollar’s strong downtrend, market participants might be inclined to sell USD at higher levels.

Recently, the release of the monthly NFP report failed to generate extreme volatility in the market, which is why traders now brace for a more muted market reaction. Whatever the case, we will prepare for both bullish and bearish scenarios.

EUR/USD

The current uptrend channel is still intact and after the euro refrained from falling below 1.2385 the chances are in favor of further bullish momentum, driving the pair towards 1.2650 and possibly 1.27.

GBP/USD: There has been no significant correction in the recent performance of the cable with the pair following a clear uptrend. How the cable will trade within the next hours will however depend on the outcome of the payrolls. If the pound finds its way above 1.43 we focus on higher targets at 1.4380 and 1.4450. For bearish momentum to accelerate, the pound would first need to fall below 1.4220 and further 1.4185.

Have a beautiful weekend!

U.S. Dollar Continues Slide After Trump State Of The Union Speech

Dear Traders,

Turn-around Tuesday lived up to its name and we got what we were looking for: A reversal of the dollar’s short-lived recovery and a very good daily and monthly profit. The U.S. dollar is being sucked into the maelstrom triggered by the ‘America First’ agenda of the Trump administration. As for the depreciation of the greenback and the long-term outlook, we can point out that the protectionism move will negatively influence the world’s largest economy.

The dollar extended its slide after U.S. President Trump’s State of the Union speech. As expected, Trump sought to strike a positive tone and described a “New American Moment” of wealth and opportunity. Trump called on Congress to pass a 1.5 trillion infrastructure-spending plan but this campaign promise was widely expected by the markets. Thus, the dollar’s reaction to his speech was muted.

EUR/USD

The euro recovered some of its losses after the 1.2330-support proved intact. Now that the single currency has stabilized above 1.24 we could see another test of 1.2450, a short-term resistance in the EUR/USD. If the euro finds its way above 1.2460 we expect further gains towards 1.25 and possibly even 1.2650.

The British pound started a relief rally after the psychological support at 1.40 has been tested. If the pound climbs above 1.4210 we may see a rise towards 1.43 but this depends on the risk appetite and demand for dollars ahead of the FOMC decision.

The next upcoming risk event will be the FOMC rate decision at 19:00 UTC but no changes are expected. It will be Janet Yellen’s last FOMC meeting before her term ends in February.

Before coming to the FOMC decision, we will keep an eye on the Eurozone Consumer Price report, due at 10:00 UTC, followed by the ADP report at 13:15 UTC.

The Euro’s Fate Is In Draghi’s Hands

Dear Traders,

What a trading day! The U.S. dollar extended its slide against other major currencies on the back of protectionism while the pound’s rally intensified the uptrend in GBP/USD.

Moreover, comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin steepened the dollar’s dive. He said that” obviously a weaker dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities”, a departure from America’s traditional strong dollar policy.

Our yesterday’s long entry in the GBP/USD has proved highly profitable even though we have been on the lookout for corrections. Despite the cable’s strong uptrend which could persist over the medium-term, we may see some pullback tomorrow when both U.K. and U.S. GDP reports are due for release.

GBP/USD

The pair jumped to the highest level since June 23, 2016 – the day of the Brexit referendum. The reasons for the strong rally lie not only in the weakening dollar but also in good U.K. data and the progress in Brexit talks. On a weekly basis we got a bullish breakout suggesting that there could be accelerated bullish momentum on the way towards 1.46 – the next crucial resistance zone. As long as the pound remains above 1.40, the overall outlook remains constructive.

While the biggest story was the pound’s strong rise, the performance of the euro was not bad either. The euro broke above 1.2350 and headed towards 1.2450 ahead of the ECB meeting. Whether the euro can hold onto its high levels or can even extend its rally, will hinge on the rhetoric of Mr. Draghi at the ECB press conference at 13:30 UTC.

If ECB President Mario Draghi joins the chorus of policymakers speaking against the euro’s strength, the euro could quickly give up some of its gains. However, the devil is in the details and if Draghi fails to convince the market of the ECB’s concerns about the currency’s strength, the euro could further rise.

EUR/USD

We prepare for higher volatility today and expect larger market swings. On the topside, we will now focus on the 1.2460-barrier, which could act as a short-term resistance. For bearish momentum to accelerate, it would need a break below 1.23 and further 1.22. As long as the euro remains above 1.23 chances are in favor of the bulls.

Euro And Cable Trend Higher And Higher And Now…Maybe Lower?

Dear Traders,

There was nothing stopping the British pound from further rising against the U.S. dollar. While we still anticipate near-term corrections in the strong performance of the GBP/USD, we need to pay attention to the solid uptrend. The pound was able to stabilize above 1.40 and if it extends its gains above 1.4060 we could possibly see a run for 1.4170. On the bottom side, we expect some fresh support coming in at 1.3950. However, traders should bear in mind that corrections are inevitable following the strong performance of the recent days and weeks. One look at the weekly chart below is enough to realize that the cable approaches overbought territory and thus faces the risk of pullbacks.

Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar suffered another setback against its major counterparts. U.S. President Trump’s decision to put tariffs on imported solar panels and washing machines may stoke protectionism and fears of trade wars.

The euro trended upwards, contrary to expectations, ahead of tomorrow’s ECB meeting. We still see the risk of profit-taking in the EUR/USD given the possibility of dovish comments from ECB President Draghi at tomorrow’s ECB’s press conference. For now, we expect the EUR/USD to trade between 1.2380 and 1.2250.

Pound Breaks Above 1.40 – What’s Next?

Dear Traders,

The best performer at the beginning of this week was undoubtedly the British pound which took a short glimpse above 1.40 amidst a more upbeat mood among investors regarding Brexit talks. The pound rose to a high of 1.4003 in Asia trading and we are still somewhat skeptical about the potential for further upward movement given an overbought situation. The strong uptrend in the GBP/USD depends not only on the weakness of the U.S. dollar, but also on positive U.K. data.

However, we were able to book a good profit yesterday by trading our long entry.

GBP/USD: Based on the pound’s general strength, we recommend sterling bulls to focus on a price range between 1.4110 and 1.3920. Below 1.3915 we anticipate deeper corrections towards 1.3850.

EUR/USD: The euro traded with a tailwind and rose towards the upper barrier of its current sideways trend channel. If the 1.23-barrier is significantly breached we expect further upside momentum driving the currency towards 1.2365. Current supports are seen at 1.2230, 1.2210 and 1.2165.

The German ZEW Survey is due for release at 10:00 UTC and could have a minor impact on the price action in the euro.

U.S. Dollar Weaker Ahead Of NFP Report

Dear Traders,

The euro extended its gains and headed towards 1.21 on the back of a weakening U.S. dollar. Our long entry has thus proved profitable. As stated in our yesterday’s analysis, we now expect the EUR/USD to test the 1.2130/50 area. A current support is however seen at the 1.20-barrier.

The British advanced against the greenback after the 1.35-support proved intact. We now expect a next resistance to come in at around 1.3650/60. If the pound, however, falls back below 1.3490, it may extend its slide towards 1.3450.

Today’s focus will turn to the U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls, scheduled for release at 13:30 UTC. The jobs report is projected to show 190K jobs in December while yesterday’s ADP report exceeded expectations, signaling continued momentum in the U.S. economy.

We wish you a nice weekend.

GBP/USD: Short Traders Benefit From Bearish Tilt

Dear Traders,

It has been a relatively quiet start to an eventful trading week with the U.S. dollar slightly strengthening against the pound and the euro ahead of the FOMC meeting. The British pound tumbled towards 1.3330 as Brexit optimism fades. While short traders of the GBP/USD were able to book some profit yesterday, the EUR/USD traded little changed and none of our daily signal entries was triggered.

Today’s focus will shift to the U.K. Consumer Price Report due at 9:30 UTC. If inflation comes in higher than forecast, the pound could find its way back towards 1.3430 and 1.3490. As long as the 1.33-support remains intact, we could see some bullish pullback. If 1.33 breaks we expect further losses towards 1.3220.

From the Eurozone, we have the German ZEW Survey scheduled for release at 10:00 UTC.

The EUR/USD is currently tilted to the downside and if the currency pair is unable to break the 1.18- threshold significantly, we expect the euro to test the 1.17-level.

EUR And GBP With A Tailwind, But Do We Underestimate USD?

Dear Traders,

Both British pound and euro traded higher against the U.S. dollar Thursday, although the dollar was also strong against other currencies. The dollar received a boost after Arizona Senator John McCain said he would support the tax plan but the tax reform bill is still far from done and dusted. Votes on the tax bill will resume today and while this could be dollar-positive we bear in mind that the markets are very sensitive to tax headlines.

On the economic docket, the ISM Manufacturing report due at 15:00 UTC will receive most attention while manufacturing in the U.S. is expected to remain robust in November.

Technically speaking, we continue to favor the upward trend in both EUR/USD and GBP/USD. The pound climbed above 1.35 and was able to stabilize above that threshold. If the cable is able to take the next hurdle at 1.3550, we probably see a run for 1.36 and possibly even 1.3650. The uptrend is considered intact as long as prices remain above 1.3450/1.34. For the sentiment to sour the pound would need to break below 1.3370.

Sterling traders may keep an eye on the U.K. PMI Manufacturing at 09:30 UTC.

The euro headed towards 1.1950 after it re-tested the 1.18-support level. If the euro climbs above 1.1935 we expect further gains towards 1.20. If 1.1930 however holds, remaining a short-term resistance for euro bulls, the single currency could fall back towards 1.1830 and 1.18.

We wish you good trades and a wonderful first weekend of December.

EUR/USD: 1.19 Could Be A Make-It Or Break-It Level

Dear Traders,

Yesterday was dominated by a weakening U.S. dollar, which extended its slide against the euro and British pound after the market interpreted the FOMC minutes as slightly dovish. While Fed policy makers see another rate hike this year, many issued concern that low inflation was not a temporary phenomenon. The priced-in probability of a December rate hike is still unchanged around 75 percent but if Fed officials believe that inflation could stay low for longer, then they might be less inclined to stay committed to a steep rate hike path in the future. The minutes were neither more dovish nor more hawkish but market participants interpreted the increasing concern about inflation as dollar-negative.

The focus now shifts to tomorrow’s U.S. Consumer price report, which, if positive, could boost the dollar.

EUR/USD

The euro rose steadily up to a high of 1.1878 and the linear movement seems quite an atypical performance of the market. The 1.19-level could now serve as a ‘make-it’ or ‘break-it’ barrier. If the euro is able to break significantly above 1.1910, we expect further gains towards 1.20 and possibly even the September high of 1.2092. If the price, however, remains below the 1.19-barrier, the euro could start giving up some gains and may fall back towards 1.1780. Moreover, we bear I mind that the RSI index approaches overbought territory, a situation that could limit near-term gains in the euro.

ECB President Mario Draghi will hold a speech today at 14:30 UTC in Washington and if he touches on monetary policy the euro could respond to his comments with volatile swings.

The GBP/USD traded range-bound between our entry levels at 1.3235 on the upper and 1.3175 on the lower side. During the Asian trading session, the pound sterling was finally able to break above 1.3235 and rose to a high of 1.3265. As mentioned in previous analysis, we expect a next resistance near 1.33 and this level could be crucial for the future price development in the cable.

U.S. Dollar Weakness Ahead? ADP And ISM Reports In Focus

Dear Traders,

Trading was relatively quiet Tuesday with the U.S. dollar’s latest recovery losing some momentum. After crucial support zones in the EUR/USD and GBP/USD have been tested, it seems that the euro and pound could find a bottom in the near-term.

EUR/USD: The euro strengthened against the greenback after dipping slightly below 1.17. With the 1.17-support still unbroken, our focus now turns to the 1.1820/30-resistance level which could limit gains in short-term time frames.

GBP/USD: The cable was able to stabilize above 1.3235 and we now anticipate some pullback towards 1.3340/50. For the bias to shift from bearish to bullish it would need a sustained break above 1.3460. A lower support is however seen at 1.3180.

How the dollar will trade within the next two days will mainly depend on the U.S. employment data. Today we have the ADP private payrolls (12:15 UTC) and the ISM service sector activity report (14:00 UTC) scheduled for release. Traders should pay close attention to these reports as they could determine how the USD will trade ahead of the U.S. payrolls report on Friday. Furthermore, we have another speech from Fed Chair Janet Yellen at 19:15 UTC.

Sterling traders may also keep an eye on the U.K. PMI report due for release at 8:30 UTC.

After yesterday’s quiet trading we expect higher volatility today and wish you good trades.
